Before this week I knew little about COI and social presence in online learning. After reviewing the weekly readings, I learned about the importance of teachers’ presence in an online learning environment as it can facilitate deeper social and cognitive presence. My initial thoughts on the COI framework included questioning the universities and professors’ knowledge of it. Last year was my first experience of online learning and reflecting back, I excelled better in the classes with a strong teacher presence. The teachers who effectively designed the class and created a collaborative environment through zoom sessions with student discussion allowed me to retain more information and have a cognitive presence. On the other hand, when the teacher posted audio recordings simply regurgitating long quotes of the readings without explanation, I was anxious, isolated, unsatisfied, and unmotivated. The article discussed including the creation of feedback loops to allow for adjustment throughout the course. In the case of my class without teacher presence, this would have been helpful as students could share their concerns with the audio recordings and no action was taken to change it. Considering social presence when designing online courses for students will be beneficial to their learning as it allows them to fully and meaningfully engage with the content.
